Is ROI the only thing that matters while selecting MBA colleges?

Suresh and Ramesh are old school friends. Unlike most stories where one is smart and the other is lucky, in this story both friends are smart and hardworking. Both pursued undergrad from the same institute with the same field and got almost the same scores. The duo then went their separate ways to pursue post graduation from different MBA colleges. The two colleges, let’s provide them with believable names, ABC and XYZ institute. They belonged to the same tier of institutes but were separated by minor differences.

After the completion of MBA in IT, both friends by a twist of fate ended up working side-by-side. Both friends were amazed by their similar yet varied experience. Suresh was surprised see Ramesh get the same profile as him. This is because Ramesh’s institute XYZ had a lower fee and smaller campus had still ended up in the same profile and company as him. Ramesh on the other hand, was expecting that ABC institute, being one of the top 10 colleges in India would be a strict college. But, he was startled when Suresh told him about all the fun that he had.

ROI: Sole factor or one of the factors while assessing MBA colleges?

The story above has no moral, till now, as it is missing some additional information and perspective. But coming back to the matter at hand, ROI! Majority of the people would agree that ROI (Return on Investment) is vital in selection of top MBA colleges. The ROI of MBA colleges is one of the first attributes that a potential applicant looks for but there in uncertainty regarding the numbers and figures that the applicant has accumulated. These fester into questions such as: Is the average placement package inflated? Hidden fees that could have been missed? But even without these questions ROI is just the numerical representation of the expected return one might hope to gain. It does not account for a horde of factors which are integral to the success and operation of MBA institutes.

It is worth mentioning that ROI is a crucial factor which should be considered and researched thoroughly before applying to any MBA programs. ROI would help in providing you with a proper guide which would help in filtering out many colleges so that you could select one the best MBA colleges. But there are other factors that one should consider before finalizing a college. These may be related to attributes of the college that are worth pondering over.

Alumni Network

In today’s world, constant communication and connections have become the crux of being successful. In the global corporate world, networking has become an indispensible part of a person’s arsenal. The network of Alumni can be vital in opening the right doors and availing the right opportunities. But this does not mean that one can select any college just because they have famous and successful Alumni. Like every other factor mentioned in the article, each is crucial but cannot be treated as the sole criterion while making a decision for selecting MBA colleges.

Internship and Curriculum

Another important factor which should be considered while selecting MBA colleges is the nature and type of curriculum that is being implemented and followed by the MBA institute. It is worth noticing that different colleges have different curriculum and teaching practices. Even though many of the subjects, textbooks and lessons might be similar, factors such as teaching techniques can be the difference maker. For example, two institutes have the same MBA in IT courses and refer to the same textbooks but one institute is only focusing on theoretical learning whereas the other institute is focusing on not only theoretical learning but also practical learning by allocating industry projects or providing a simulated environment for applying concepts in practice.

Another factor that should be taking into account is the internship. Many students do not weight the internship as they have a misconception that past work experience combined with grades in all academic aspects should be enough to impress a recruiter. But as we know that most of the students opt for MBA to change their path of career or the Job Profile that they had. Therefore, a good internship can be crucial in providing the recruiter with evidence that you are capable of working in a new scenario and condition. Therefore the types of internships availed by MBA colleges is also important.

“All Work and No Play makes…..” Well you know how it goes

Fun is not the first thing which pops into head when someone says MBA. But fun is one of necessities of MBA Programs. But fun does not mean letting go of and avoiding every other responsibility. It just means working yet at the same time having fun and enjoying the moments that you are spending. Often, people regret missing out on the fun side of campus life as they were too focused on final placements. And rightly so as at the end of the day most of the students hope to use the MBA degree to earn a good job. But at the same time games and fun teach a lot of things which the core syllabus cannot.

And the most obvious factor of all: Personal Reasons

No guesses but everyone has a personal preference while selecting MBA colleges. The reasons vary from person to person depending on the situation and in some cases the upbringing. In some cases, people want to stay near their homes, whereas some want to explore so they prefer MBA institutes that are far from their homes. Some prefer choosing an institute because one of the professors is a hero to them. A lesser (but rarely mentioned) reason is chasing after someone (enough said, wink). People that want to just enjoy their two years of MBA would make a choice based on the campus life of the college.

In the end, there are many aspects one should consider before selecting MBA colleges. ROI though a crucial and vital factor is not the sole reason for selection of MBA colleges.

Rohit, Pratap and Rahul have been friends since childhood. They have always studied from the same institute, be it school or college. They are doing their graduation right now. Soon, they’ll be in the same boat again, trying to gain entry into one of the top MBA colleges in India.

All three of them wish to end up in the same institute. But Rohit thinks that some entrance tests are too difficult. He wants an exam that is simpler. Pratap, on the other hand, has an issue with performance pressure. He cannot perform well in exams the first time. But if he gets more than one chance, he can do wonders.

Every human being has a different level of intellect and problem-solving ability. CAT exam is considered to be one of the best and toughest entrance exams conducted in India. There are many exams that are different in syllabus and pattern than CAT.

There are around 14 national level MBA entrance exams for the top MBA colleges in India. Some of them are CAT, GMAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT, NMAT, etc. Further, there are 11 state level MBA entrance exams for getting into local universities. For example, TANCET is Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test held for the students of Tamil Nadu.

Since there are so many entrance exams to choose from, one shouldn’t get overwhelmed by their number. To be able to decide which exam to appear for, one needs to know the basics of these exams. Let’s take up each exam one by one.

CAT –

Common Aptitude Test is perhaps the most important MBA entrance exam in India. Taking CAT enables you to apply for all the IIMs and over 100 top MBA colleges in India including FMS Delhi, SP Jain Mumbai, MDI, IITs and NITIE. It is a computer based exam which is 3 hours (180 minutes, 60 minutes per section) long and is scheduled to be conducted on 4th December 2016 this year. Around 2 lakh students appear for CAT every year.

GMAT –

General Management Aptitude Test is used by students who wish to study abroad. Some colleges in India do accept GMAT scores. One can attempt GMAT multiple times, with a gap of 1 month between two attempts. GMAT scores are valid for five years.

MAT –

Management Aptitude Test is held by AIMA around four times a year (February, May, September and December; next date- 11th December’16). Sitting for MAT exam allows you to apply for institutes like Christ University, EMPI, NILM, Amity, and EDI. The exam is available in both computer and paper formats. It is around 2 and a half hours long.

CMAT –

Common Management Aptitude Test is held by AICTE once a year (from 2016 onwards) in January. Appearing for CMAT helps you apply for colleges approved by AICTE all over the country. Some of the colleges that accept CMAT scores are Sydenham, Somaiya, Welingkar, Goa Institute of Management, etc. Around 60 to 80 thousand students appear for CMAT every year.

ATMA –

Aims Test for Management Admission is approved by Ministry of HRD of the Government of India. More than 100 colleges all over the country accept the ATMA score. This exam is conducted five times in a year. Some of the colleges that accept the score of ATMA are Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, and Institute of Finance and International Management.

MAHCET –

Maharashtra Common Entrance Test is held by DTE, Maharashtra. The test is 150 minutes long. It generally takes place in February or March. Some of the top MBA colleges in India that accept the score of MAHCET are Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship Education (SIMSREE), MET’s Institute of Management, Xavier Institute of Management & Research, and S.I.E.S. College of Management Studies.

XAT –

Xaviers Aptitude Test is conducted by XLRI around the month of January (XAT 2017-8th January’17). XAT exam also includes essay writing. Colleges that are a part ofXAMI (Xavier Association of Management Institutes, which includes XLRI Jamshedpur) consider the XAT score. Further, there are XAT associate members such as Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, S P Jain Institute of Management and Research, and Loyola Institute of Business Administration that accept the XAT score.

Other exams like NMAT, SNAP, IIFT and IBSAT are college-centric entrance tests. NMAT is for NMIMS colleges in India; similarly, SNAP is for Symbiosis colleges in India. IIFT- the college which was started by the Government of India to improve India’s foreign trade in 1963, conducts its own exam. Students appearing for IBSAT can apply for IBS colleges spread across India.

DUAL SPECIALIZATION: The New Business Jargon?

The air was heavy with the overwhelming waft from my mother’s cooking. It was homecoming for my elder brother, Anuj, following three whole years of virtual conversations. While the anticipation in the house grew with each stroke of the clock, my subconscious took me through an assortment of worries that none but I knew of. With every glance at my watch, I was reminded of the target that hung above my neck, while time slowly slipped away like a sly snake with absolutely no regard for anybody.

A few impatient hours later my brother was at long last home and of course, we rejoiced in a sheath of enthusiasm of a family reunion. For a blissful few minutes my mind remained occupied with all that my brother had to say when again, in a single dull moment, the numbers reared their ugly head again. Not one to miss out on my lack of enthusiasm during a conversation, Anuj caught up with me. Was I glad that he did? Maybe. Anuj is also an MBA Graduate, except he graduated almost 5 years before I did and unlike me, marketing didn’t interest him at all. If there had to be anyone that a fresh and completely inexperienced MBA graduate like me could rant to, it simply had to be Anuj.

To begin with, I had seemingly a very simple problem. While I had absolutely no trouble navigating through my specialization, I just could not manage to bring a team together to achieve our targets. I could possibly blame it on my utter and complete lack of people skills, yet was I to think that my entire career was veering towards an untimely demise owing to this? I did not have the slightest idea of human resource management, neither had I anticipated that such a requirement would arise even in its most general application. My trail of thought lead me to think about those, like me, who are also in all probability attempting to break through their own expectations but are limited by a handicap of a specific aspect in their stream of work.

My Big Brother, took it upon himself to enlighten me about dual specialization. It seemed that dual specialization was the answer to those that wanted to opt for specializations in more than one domain.
